Oil on Canvas

Biography

Sunny Hilliker is a representational oil painter living in Southern California. Born and raised in rural Minnesota, she developed a respect and appreciation for nature which greatly influences her work. Early on, her desire for creative expression took other forms such as woodworking and photography. It wasn’t until near age 50 that she first explored oil painting.

College courses in drawing and art history were her introduction to fine art. Workshops and video courses later provided additional knowledge, inspiration, and skill building techniques. She views the path of the artist as one of continual growth, and is constantly challenging herself to develop her vision.

Painting outdoors or “en plein air” has had a major impact on Sunny’s painting journey. She has been active in plein air group outings in the San Diego and Laguna Beach areas for over 15 years. She also attends life drawing sessions regularly. For her, painting from life spurs enthusiasm throughout the process–whether creating landscapes or portraits.

No matter the theme, Sunny’s overall priority is to create authentic work. She follows the rule for

subject matter, to “paint what you love.” Minnesota roots will often draw her to rural scenes, but her years of living near the beach continue to influence scenes of boating and coastal experiences.

Active memberships include the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, Oil Painters of America, California Art Club, the San Diego Museum of Art Artists Guild, Fallbrook Art Center, and the American Impressionist Society.

Statement

My works of art are based on my love of color and sunlight. Often, just catching a glance of reflections on water, the rich colors in florals, or shadows on a boat or pathway will inspire a new painting. My seascapes begin with studies made at the beach, which is not only inspiring, but a favorite place to spend time. I have found that oil paint provides a wonderful medium to express texture and convey depth. Though I am a latecomer to the world of visual arts, I hope that the pursuit of bringing my visual interpretations will add to joy and beauty in the world.
