The Salon Series
In 1667, the Académie des Beaux-Arts opened its doors to the world and declared, in no uncertain terms, what art was — and what it wasn't. The Paris Salon became the most powerful stage in the Western art world, its high walls stacked floor to ceiling with paintings, its acceptance was career-making, its rejection… devastating. Yet the irony that unfolded would see the beginnings of what celebrated contemporary would come to be. The artists the Salon turned away — Monet, Cézanne, Pissarro — went on to inspire and ignite the movements that would define modern art forever. In trying to draw the boundaries of art, the Salon accidentally erased them.
In honor of this Art Scene West gallery presents The Salon Series — a three-part exhibition that honors both sides of that legacy. The authority of technical soundness, and the power of passion and imagination come to life. This open call brings the vastness of contemporary art to the same curated stage. Every style welcome. Every artist respected.
