In the spiritual tradition of old Hawaiʻi, sharks were not feared but honored as ʻaumākua — ancestral spirit guardians — and Kinilau embodied that sacred relationship between humans and the ocean's apex predators. As a protector of sea life, Kinilau watched over fishermen, guided their nets, and kept balance in the waters between the mortal world and the deep.
Artist Bio:
As a self-taught woodcarver/sculptor, I have learned my trade through association with many indigenous woodcarvers throughout the islands of the Indo-Pacific over the past 35 years where I followed a career in fisheries development.
I specialize in 3D and Bas Relief carvings that reflect the infinite drama, wonder and romance of the legends, myths and technology of the Indo-Pacific cultures. In producing my works, I rely heavily on the use of traditional woodcarving techniques and tools, a challenging approach to carving that produces more aesthetically and personally satisfying results. When a carving is completed, I finish most pieces with an oil finish and wax. I carve a wide variety of woods such as Koa, Milo, Ohai from Hawaii, Guanacaste, Ebony, true Mahogony, Rosewood, Primavera and many more.
Mainly working on a "One on One" basis with clients, my numerous works are now held in private collections throughout Hawaii, Continental USA and Canada. A sampling of my works and a contact Email can be viewed on my website above.
