Growing up in Southern California, Brianne Cortez was in and out of art classes her entire childhood. After graduating from Boston University, Brianne took up embroidery as a way to get out of a major art block. Slowly she fell in love stitch by stitch. All her years of drawing and painting classes turned out to be instrumental. Embroidery can also be called 'thread painting,' and in many ways it can be like painting. Building texture with different kinds of stitches, laying colors with thread instead of paint. In nearly 9 years since she has began her embroidery journey, Brianne has sold in many markets and had dozens of commissions. She strives to show that contemporary embroidery can encapsulate the rich tapestry that is life. Her art is bright and colorful, marrying beauty with the odd. She finds inspiration in exploring whimsy and the thrill of a good scare. The pieces Brianne makes reflect the vibrancy of the world, so radiant that all the colors of the universe can be seen.
Even though I am primarily an embroidery artist, I love to explore so many different avenues of art- from embroidery to paintings, to scratchboard and quilling, I am passionate about creating art. I strive to add beauty into the world.I'm inspired by bright colors and the odd and weirdly beautiful and I work to make unique and unusual pieces that will light up a space. My pieces are an extension of my hopes for the future, that just because you grow older doesn't mean you have to forget the fun and whimsy of childhood. Some pieces of my work marries beauty and the macabre. Others are fanciful storytelling scenes. Some are eerie and spooky and embrace the thrill of a good scare. I want my art to create delight and awe. One stitch at a time, I use thread and a needle to create pieces that will delight the eye and make you want to get lost in the stitches.
