Martha Pope Gorris began her creative journey as a writer. She earned a B.A. from George Mason University, Fairfax,  Virginia, in Creative Writing and has many articles and stories published as well as three novels and two nonfiction books. For years she hosted a writers’ critique group as well as serving on a local writers’ guild board. An unexpected illness slowly shifted her creativity toward fine art, and she has been painting ever since. For twenty-five years, she participated in a weekly watercolor class and became an active member of the San Diego Watercolor Society. Over time, her desire leaned toward brighter, bolder colors. Having won many ribbons and participated in various art events within San Diego county, she will tell you that above all, bringing more color into the world makes her the happiest.

For me, being an artist means having the freedom to explore and express myself without explanation. At this stage in my life, art has become my meditation, my greater connection to my Creator and a source of joy. It urges me to stretch beyond my comfort zone and to stay curious, not just as a creative outlet but as a way of living. My art is a blend of traditional, abstract and contemporary styles, with themes that inspire me at the moment. I like working with watercolor and acrylic and presently I’m exploring mixed media. It has been suggested that artists should have a consistent style but I prefer to go with my inner voice and embrace variety.
